Vision Monday had previously reported on Oct. 19, 2009 that Maui Jim had “concluded its distribution agreement with all Luxottica-owned retail stores worldwide, effective immediately.” At that time, Chris Abbruzzese, Maui Jim’s vice president of marketing had said, “this is an amicable decision” and cited “Luxottica’s long term strategy of vertical integration.”
In reply to a query from Vision Monday on Jan. 15th, a spokesperson for the company said, “Maui Jim is back in business with Luxottica. After some negotiations, Maui Jim has renewed our partnership in a way that will be mutually beneficial and ultimately better serve the Maui Jim brand and consumer.”
Maui Jim began selling in all company-owned Luxottica chains in 1992-93 before Sunglass Hut was purchased by Luxottica, though the company has declined to comment on what percentage of their business was represented by Luxottica stores.
Luxottica Group owns the Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision, Optical Shop of Aspen, OPSM, and Bright Eyes retail chains.
