The preeminent international association for medical doctors who specialize in vitreoretinal care, the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), installed Suber S. Huang, MD, MBA, as President at the organization’s 28th Annual Meeting, held in Vancouver in August 2010. At the meeting, the American Retina Foundation (ARF), the charitable arm for ASRS, inducted Dr. Huang as its Chair.
“I am proud to serve as the ASRS president and ARF chair, and I look forward to promoting the fundamental goals of our organizations – education, training, and research,” Dr. Huang said. “My focus during my term in office will be to ensure that our patients are reaping the benefits of the recent major scientific advances and therapeutic improvements in macular degeneration, diabetes, and other blinding retinal diseases.”
As President for ASRS, Dr. Huang will provide leadership for the nonprofit association, which represents more than 2,400 medical doctors focused on furthering education and enhancing the ability of practitioners to provide the highest quality of patient care. In addition to the dissemination of responsible information to physicians and patients throughout the world, ASRS provides continuing medical education opportunities and sponsors grants through ARF to support retina-related research.
Dr. Huang is currently Vice-Chair and Director of the Center for Retina and Macular Disease at the University Hospitals Eye Institute. He joined the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at University Hospitals of Cleveland/Case Western Reserve University in 1993. In 2004, Dr. Huang received the Philip F. and Elizabeth G. Searle – Suber Huang, MD Professorship in Ophthalmology. In 2003, he began serving on the Steering Committee for the National Eye Health Education Program, an advisory board to the National Eye Institute/National Institutes of Health. He currently serves on the Regulatory and Federal Affairs Committee and is an American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Leadership Program member.
